Web.com Review: Design (3.5 stars)

Smaller Selection of Templates, but More Design Editing Options

The selection of design templates and images is smaller than other builders, but SiteBuilder gives you a variety of ways in which you can tailor your template to suit your business.  It also provides more flexible layouts than other form-based website builders.

Design Templates Can Incorporate Your Business Logo

SiteBuilder has a design template editor that lets you incorporate your business's logo into the header.  Or if you don't have a logo, you can type in your business's name.  You can also change the colors and font of your menu buttons.  A few of the simpler templates also let you change the colors of other parts of the design, but most of them don't give you the option.  You also don't have the option of creating your own header or template to apply to your website.

Lots of Layout Options for a Form-Based Builder

There are 8 column-based layout styles for you to choose from when building your site.  Within these, you can use a checkbox system to move your different page items around the layout, including text boxes, images, even site add-ons (i.e. newsletter sign-up, guestbook, site referral, etc).  It takes a lot of clicking around, but you have more control over the layout than you do with most form-based website builders, though it's not as easy as WYSIWYG systems.

Not a Great Selection of Templates

There are only 313 design templates in 11 categories oriented toward businesses and organizations. Each main category has a number of sub-categories to help you narrow down your choices.  The quality of templates is mixed.  There are a few nice ones in each category with a larger number of plain or boxy-looking ones.

Templates Are a Mixed Bag

Image Quality Not Up to Standard

There are a couple of hundred images in 29 categories, both clip art and stock photos.  Some of the photos are good quality, however, the clip art images are small and plain, and for the most part, not worth using if you can find what you're looking for in a photograph.  The other problem is that some of the images have the copyright info embedded in the picture, which doesn't look professional if you're using it on a business website.

Would You Use These Images to Represent Your Business?

Expensive Design Program

Web.com offers a design program for people who don't want to use a template, but it'll cost you.  Here is a breakdown of the pricing:

  • Website Express package: $299.95 for a 3-page starter site and 30 min. one-on-one consulting.

  • eCommerce Express package: $599.95 for 5-page online store with 25 products and 60 min. one-on-one consulting.

  • eCommerce Plus package: $1499.95 for 7-page advanced Online Store website with 100 products and 60 min. consulting.

The eCommerce Plus package seems way more expensive than it's worth.  The main difference between the two e-commerce packages is the e-commerce system that's used; the Express package uses Web.com's e-store builder while the Plus package uses Miva Merchant.  While we understand that Miva Merchant is more complicated to set up, it's not so bad you should have to pay $900 more.  And if you don't have 100 products to set up, you're really not getting your money's worth.
